Smith's injury is similar to Andre Johnson's in that the bone broke through the skin. Smith's finger will require stitches, so he'll miss the preseason opener. He should be back practicing by the time the Panthers leave camp.

He had the pinkie and ring fingers taped, and a Jimmy Clausen pass hit perfectly between the middle and ring fingers, splitting the webbing wide open. He expects to be back on the field next week after the stitches come out.
